SuiteCommerce Themes: Base Theme vs Pre-Built Themes

Last updated 2026-10-27 · By Maher Chamma, Entartes

Every SuiteCommerce site runs on a theme, and the first real decision in a storefront project is where that theme comes from. NetSuite ships six pre-built Commerce themes, each aimed at a product vertical, plus a Base Theme that developers use as a starting point. This post covers what each option gives you and how we decide between them.

Compatibility: Commerce themes need SuiteCommerce or SuiteCommerce Advanced (SCA) Aconcagua or later. They are not compatible with SuiteCommerce MyAccount or SuiteBilling Subscriptions.

Once a theme is installed and activated, you can:

  • Configure it in the SuiteCommerce Configuration record: home page, footer, web fonts and other theme properties.
  • Change its skin with the Theme Skin Manager in Site Management Tools. Each theme ships with skins, and you can edit a skin's elements in the Theme Settings panel without code.
  • Extend it through placeholders in the theme's template files. Developers use these data-view and CMS placeholders to drop in custom extensions or custom content types.

The Base Theme

NetSuite also provides the SuiteCommerce Base Theme: a neutral starting point for theme development. It has no vertical styling of its own. Developers build the design on top of it and activate the result on a domain like any other theme.

Three ways to get your theme

1. Use a pre-built theme and a skin (no code)

Pick the theme that matches your vertical, choose or edit a skin, and configure it in the SuiteCommerce Configuration record.

  • Good for: stores whose products fit one of the six verticals and whose brand can live within the skin settings (colors, fonts, imagery).
  • Why: it's the fastest and cheapest route, and NetSuite keeps maintaining the theme.
  • Limit: you get that theme's layout. If the design needs to look substantially different, skins won't get you there.

2. Customize a pre-built theme

Take a pre-built theme and change its templates and styles.

  • Good for: a theme that is already very close to the design you want.
  • The catch: you inherit every layout and styling decision the theme made, and much of the work becomes overriding them. A customized NetSuite theme is deployed as your own theme, so you maintain it from then on instead of NetSuite.

3. Build from the Base Theme

Design the storefront first, then build it on the Base Theme.

  • Good for: a custom brand design, or B2B stores with ordering flows the vertical themes weren't designed around.
  • Why: you start from a clean, predictable codebase with nothing to undo. Every style in the theme is one you chose, which keeps later changes, upgrades and extensions simpler.
  • Cost: more design and front-end work up front.

How we decide

  • A pre-built theme fits the vertical and the brand: use it with a skin. Don't pay for custom work you don't need.
  • The design is genuinely custom: start from the Base Theme.
  • Customizing a pre-built theme is usually a false economy. It looks cheaper at the start, then the cost shows up in overrides and in owning a fork of someone else's design. We do it only when the theme is already very close to the target.

For B2B distributors, which make up much of the NetSuite market, Summit is the pre-built theme to look at first, because it's designed around industrial supply catalogs. If it doesn't fit, a Base Theme build is usually the better next step than reworking Summit.

Whichever route you take, plan the theme and your extensions together. Themes control layout and style, and extensions add features into the placeholders the theme provides. See our guide to all 33 SuiteCommerce extensions.
